Mapbox Boundaries & Atlas
Two products taken from zero to one: a global boundaries data product and self-hosted maps.
The goal
As Mapbox's first customer-facing engineer, I kept hitting the same two blockers in enterprise deals: customers needed administrative boundary data to join their data to geography, and regulated customers refused cloud-hosted maps. Each blocker was a missing product.
What shipped
I drove both from zero to one as the founding product manager:
- Boundaries: a global administrative boundary data product for joining customer data to geography.
- Atlas: self-hosted Mapbox for on-premises and air-gapped environments.
I led both from strategy through launch before handing them to dedicated product managers. Both remain in Mapbox's product portfolio.
What I learned
The highest-signal product insights come from stalled deals. Turning field friction into durable products is the pattern I've reused at every scale since.
